Brake Controller Install
Finding the factory connector, wiring the controller, and setting the gain so the trailer stops the trailer.
Find the factory connector first
Most tow-rated trucks and vans built in the last twenty years already have a brake-controller connector behind the dash. Finding it turns a two-hour splice job into a twenty-minute plug-in, and it keeps the factory harness intact.
Before you go looking, check whether the vehicle already has an OEM integrated controller — Ford, GM and Ram have built trailer braking into the vehicle's own electronics for years now, and on those trucks the job is a factory module and a tow package, not an aftermarket box under the dash.
If there's no integrated controller, look for the factory port before you hardwire anything. Harness manufacturers publish a brake-port (BP) code per vehicle telling you which general area of the cab that connector hides in. The four wires
Every brake controller, proportional or time-delayed, lands on the same four connections. The colours below are the common aftermarket convention, not an electrical law — verify function with a meter rather than trusting a colour or a pin position.

Verify the 7-way before you cut
Pin assignments at the 7-way are mostly standard and not reliably so. Published diagrams disagree on the black and red positions, and on some applications the battery feed and the brake output are reversed relative to what you would expect.
Meter the connector on the vehicle in front of you. Probe for 12V with the key on, and for stop-lamp signal with the pedal pressed, before you commit a splice. Two minutes with a meter beats a warranty conversation about a burnt controller.
Proportional or time-delayed
Proportional controllers read the tow vehicle's actual deceleration with an accelerometer and apply the trailer brakes to match. Brake gently and the trailer brakes gently. This is what you want on anything heavy, and it is far kinder to trailer brake shoes.
Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed period once the pedal is pressed, regardless of how hard you are stopping. Cheaper, simpler, and noticeably less smooth — the trailer either lags or shoves depending on how the delay is set.
Setting the gain
- Hitch the trailer loaded the way it will actually travel. Gain set against an empty trailer will be wrong on the road.
- Find level, dry, empty pavement and get to roughly 25 mph.
- Apply the manual override lever on the controller only — not the brake pedal. This isolates the trailer brakes so you feel what they alone are doing.
- Raise the gain a step at a time, repeating, until the trailer brakes just begin to lock, then back it off one step.
- Re-check whenever the load changes materially. This is a setting, not an installation step you do once.
What usually goes wrong
- "No trailer connected" with a trailer plugged in — open on the blue circuit. Check the 7-way pin and the ground on the trailer before condemning the controller.
- Output only sometimes — nearly always the white ground. Paint, seam sealer and a star washer that never bit through are the usual suspects.
- Nothing when the pedal is pressed, but the manual lever works — that is the red stop-lamp wire, not the controller.
- Grabby, aggressive trailer braking — gain too high, or a time-delayed unit set as if it were proportional.
- Short-circuit fault at the controller — check the harness where it passes the rear bumper. Pinched and chafed wiring at the adapter kit is common on BP8/BP9 vehicles.
Before you hand it back
Test with the trailer attached and rolling, not on the lot. Confirm the controller displays output when the pedal is pressed, confirm the manual override applies the trailer brakes on its own, and confirm the display reads zero with the trailer unplugged. All three, every time.
